Leland is a small fishing town in Michigan with a big personality. Down by the boardwalk it looks like something out of Disney World. So when Melissa asked if we would meet her in Leland to capture her family’s portraits we jumped at the opportunity. We drove up Leelanau Peninsula and met the family down by the harbor. We learned that Melissa’s family was there celebrating her mom’s birthday. The family flew in from all over the U.S. to join in the celebrations and they wanted to document them all being together.
The boardwalk was flooded with summer tourists so instead we walked to a nearby spot along the water to start. The stories between sisters and each other had us in stitches as we walked along with them. As we photographed them people were casting their lines into the water hoping to catch some fish and small boats passed by along the river. It truly showed how active this fishing town really is. As we walked near downtown it smelled like fish fry was being fried up at the local restaurants.
As the sun starting slowly setting we made our way to Leland’s harbor. Sounds of seagulls and teenagers splashing around Lake Michigan filled the air. The docks were perfect to relax by and also capture the sunset from. It was truly a beautiful summer night in Northern Michigan. Big thanks again to Melissa and her family for allowing us to document their family gathering. We hope the rest of their celebrations were just as wonderful. Enjoy!
The ripples of waves off of the harbor and the family chatting on the dock makes this one of our favorite images from their session.
There was a group of teenagers jumping off into the warm summer waters of Lake Michigan.
That sunset was a fantastic ending to a Northern Michigan summer evening.
